We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat

3/18/05 02:24 am - daysoftaste - Holy shit, I can't wait to go to war... never thought I'd say that...

Oh Steven, how do I love thee?

Let me count the ways.

Well, for one, you have a talent for repeatedly making me cum all over my pants.

2/27/05 04:07 pm - movieguru101 - This struck me as true

From Roger Ebert's 1993 review of "Jurassic Park":

"Think back to another ambitious special effects picture from Spielberg, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977). That was a movie about the "idea" of visitors from outer space. It inspired us to think what an awesome thing it would be, if earth were visited by living alien beings. You left that movie shaken and a little transformed. It was a movie that had faith in the intelligence and curiosity of its audience.

In the 16 years since it was made, however, big-budget Hollywood seems to have lost its confidence that audiences can share big dreams. "Jurassic Park" throws a lot of dinosaurs at us, and because they look terrific (and indeed they do), we're supposed to be grateful. I have the uneasy feeling that if Spielberg had made "Close Encounters" today, we would have seen the aliens in the first 10 minutes, and by the halfway mark they'd be attacking Manhattan with death rays."

War of the Worlds, anyone? I hope Spielberg can find some magic in a story about rampant death and destruction.

Spielberg seems to be struggling artistically. His movies since "Schindler's List" have been kind of dark and serious, not as much fun as his hits in the 80s. Even "The Terminal" which was supposed to be sweet, escapist fare, just seemed forced, as if Steven was saying, I know I can make a fun movie again, I know it!

Minority Report and Catch Me If you Can both were fun adventure films but they had really dark undertones. It seems as if he's wrestling with himself, trying to find the innocence and magic that his films once possessed. This makes me nervous about the prospect of another Indiana Jones. I've written about this more extensively in my own journal, but basically I feel that the Spielberg who directed "Last Crusade" is not the same Spielberg who will be directing "IJ-4".

Hopefully, "War Of The Worlds" will Bring him out of his "dark period, and return him to his halcyon romps or old. It doesn't seem like a sure thing, though, as Spielberg is still working with cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, whose style tends to be darker, colorless.

I know that somewhere inside Spielberg is the director who made Jaws, just waiting to get back on the screen. I hope he finds his way.

Come on peeps. Let's keep this bitch alive.

War Of The Worlds is really making the rounds as of late.

Vengenace has also been greenlit for later this year. It's the story of the Munich Olympics massacre.

He's not dead, so neither should we.

You people should be ASHAMED.

Ashamed.

12/10/04 08:15 pm - daysoftaste - My 'War of the Worlds' trailer review:

My 'War of the Worlds' trailer review:

First of all, when I heard that a trailer was coming out today, I thought to myself, "Dingle-Fuck-berries, what finished film could they possibly have already? They've only been filming two months!" And although they have been filming the movie backwards, I doubt any special effects have been completed.

So, no, I don't think any of the footage in this trailer is from the actual film. Except possibly the final shots of the families coming out to see the smoke rising from above the hills of afar. Which I might add, although the effects look somewhat cheesy, and I seriously doubt that if that shot is from the final film and that those effects are indeed the final, it did look pretty fucking scary.

But more importantly, this is not a trailer, it is a teaser. And what have I been talking about for days now? Publicity. Publicity is everything. Things like teasers and trailers are so important, because they are supposed to convey the tone of the film. And the tone I am getting from this one feels very very good.

Let me describe a possible pattern that I am sensing here.

1. 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', a film about peaceful Extra-Terrestrial encounters and it's effect on families.

2. 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial', a film about a single alien's encounter with a child and it's effect on his family.

3. 'War of the Worlds', a film about a massive alien attack and it's effect on families?

Obviously Spielberg's movies have always been big on the theme of families, usually dysfunctional. This is no question. So I know he is going to get that part right. Are we going to see massive alien attacks and special effects galore? Most likely. But it will all revolve around story... hopefully. Praying that David Keopp doesn't fuck up this script as well.

But the feel I am getting from this trailer is golden. It reminds me of Spielberg's trailers for 'Jurassic Park' and 'The Lost World', almost like a trip back to his golden days. This is the Spielberg we know. This is the Spielberg we grew up learning to love. This is the Spielberg who makes us cry our eyes out, pee our pants, and shit our kidneys from getting scared.

I am so fucking psyched to see Spielberg go full throttle again. It's been so long. We've been going through these wonderful soufles of 'Catch Me If You Can' and 'The Terminal'. It's time for Spielberg to kick some fucking ass. And he is going to do it in the best way possible...

by blowing the fucking world to smithereens.

This is going to be good.

Am I the only one who still gets genuinely upset and pissed off when I think about "Saving Private Ryan" losing Best Picture to "Shakespeare In Love"?

I'm still in shock 6 years later.
